Field Success: JEM Radio II and Sensear Headset Deliver Clear Communication in Noisy Locomotive Cabs

Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad

At JEM Communications, we’re proud to see our technology making a real difference in the field. One of our recent customer deployments of the JEM Radio II Clean Cab Radio, paired with a Sensear SM1P SmartMuff Pro Headset and Sensear-to-JEM Radio II cable, has received enthusiastic feedback from Andy Brouse of Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad, who upgraded from an aging Motorola Spectra system.

“The JEM Radio II has been a great replacement for our aging Motorola Spectra cab radio. Using the mounting plate in place of the standard radio box, the JEM Radio II has a much cleaner look and takes up less space. An added bonus is the user adjustable squelch setting in the menu. It allows for fine adjustment of mic pickup in quiet vs noisy cabs. A very nice feature compared to the Motorolas and easily accessible. The volume can also be made louder than the former, which is very helpful when in higher throttle notches. All in all I’m very pleased with the JEM Radio II and look forward to converting the rest of my fleet over.”

The JEM Radio II was designed with modern locomotive environments in mind — intuitive, and powerful. Features like adjustable squelch and enhanced volume control ensure operators can maintain clear communication even in high-noise conditions.

Complementing the radio, the Sensear headset has proven to be an important accessory for crews working in particularly loud cabs:

“The Sensear headset has been a great addition for my locomotives with noisy cabs. Rough gearing and vibration make for a very loud cab when switching under heavy loads. This headset has taken away any confusion or need for repeated commands. Transmissions come across crystal clear and are easily responded to via the PTT button on the headset cable. The headset does very well at blocking out any outside noise, letting you focus on the control. My crews use this headset exclusively when switching heavy tonnage on the noisy locomotives. A well worth addition.”

We’re thrilled to see our solutions helping crews stay safe, efficient, and connected. If you’re looking to modernize your fleet’s communication systems, the JEM Radio II, Sensear headset, and custom cable offer a reliable, field-tested upgrade. Contact us today to learn more.
